How often. Every 3–5 years for a typical family of four. Shorter if you run a garbage disposal, have a large household, or the tank is small for the house. The technician's sludge measurement is a better guide than the calendar.
Sandy soil makes reaching a buried lid easier here than in clay country, but the shallow water table takes the margin away again: in the wet season from June to October there is very little dry soil under the field, so an overdue tank has no buffer at all and solids reach the drain field sooner. Most tanks here are 900–1,250 gallons, and the 1970s–90s concrete tanks across the mainland subdivisions often have deteriorating baffles that a contractor will flag while the lid is off. One thing to be clear about: pumping is maintenance, and it does not make a conventional system compliant with the July 2030 lagoon rule. Pumping vs. cleaning. A pump-out is routine maintenance. If your tank has gone five or more years, ask about a septic tank cleaning instead — it takes longer and costs more, but it's what a neglected tank actually needs.
