Drain field replacement in Indian River County / Vero Beach & Sebastian

When a field has failed — sealed biomat, undersized for the soil, or collapsed lines across the whole system — replacement is the fix. It's a permitted job with a site evaluation, and the soil decides the design more than anything else.

A MOUND SYSTEM BUYS BACK SEPARATION trench built above grade water table — 1 ft below grade original grade Raising the field keeps the required dry soil beneath the trench. 2 ft
When the water table is high, a mound buys back the separation the code requires.

Cost in Indian River County / Vero Beach & Sebastian: $5,000–$15,000; mound or elevated fields at the top of that range. The spread is not random. Conventional gravity fields in good soil sit at the bottom; engineered systems the soil forces on you sit at the top.

How it goes

  1. Site evaluation by the county — soil, water table, setbacks. This determines what you're allowed to build.
  2. Design and permit. The contractor submits; the county approves. Budget time for this step.
  3. Installation — excavation, new lines or engineered unit, backfill. One to three days on site.
  4. Final inspection before the system goes back into service.

Florida requires separation between the bottom of the drain field and the seasonal high water table, and on many lots here the original field never really had it — which is why replacements are often raised, as a mound or an engineered fill system, and why the top of the price range exists. Before any of that matters, establish whether the property is inside the lagoon program area. If it is, a full replacement triggers the 65 percent nitrogen-reduction requirement immediately: the new system has to be a nitrogen-reducing one, at $15,000–$25,000 to retrofit an existing system (county estimate), and there is no county grant here to offset it. That is a different conversation from a drain field quote, and it should happen before you sign one. What an ENR upgrade costs

What the yard looks like after. Honest answer: a construction site for a few weeks. Sod and grading are part of the quote; landscaping is not.

Alternatives worth asking about: where a sewer main is within reach, connecting can cost less than a new field — see lagoon for how that works in Indian River County / Vero Beach & Sebastian.
